"...if anyone makes the assistance of grace depend on the humility or obedience of man and does not agree that it is a gift of grace itself that we are obedient and humble, he contradicts the Apostle who says, "What have you that you did not receive?" (1 Cor. 4:7), and, "But by the grace of God I am what I am" (1 Cor. 15:10). (Council of Orange: Canon 6)

TULIP DVD: Let John Piper Teach Your Small Group

tulipdvd_rt.jpgTULIP: The Pursuit of God's Glory in Salvation (DVD)

Monergism Review: We spent a good portion of the evening last night watching this new training DVD from John Piper on TULIP and were not dissapointed. This is definitely a mature John Piper and far excels his earlier teaching on the subject which many of you may have heard on MP3. We highly recommend this study, especially if you wish to watch, study and discuss this with a small group. There is a study guide available that goes with the DVD for this purpose.

The aim of the DVD and study guide is to explore biblical teaching on the sovereignty of God in salvation. If you know John Piper, he is not into systems, but lets the text of Scripture drive his interpretation. During the course of the study you get to hear the great struggle Piper went through when changing from being an staunch Arminian to a Calvinist. We highly recommend this study to all who would love to persuade their skeptical friends of the precious truths of God's effectual and indelible grace to His people whom He deeeply loves.

Description: Sixteen, 30-minute DVD sessions with John Piper instruct groups in the five points of Calvinism so that they will uphold God’s Word regarding God’s saving work.

They are the fundamental tenets—better known as the “five points”—of Calvinism, and they are abbreviated as TULIP: Total depravity, Unconditional election, Limited atonement, Irresistible grace, Perseverance of the saints.

John Piper walks study groups through each point in this DVD and its companion Study Guide, discussing the implications and the issues from a fully biblical perspective. Piper’s 30-minute DVD teachings cover topics that include the meaning of “total” in total depravity, doing missions when God is sovereign, Romans 9 and the two wills of God, and ten effects of believing the five points of Calvinism.

This sixteen-session, guided group study equips facilitators, teachers, group leaders, and pastors to help their members understand the all-important differences between Calvinism and Arminianism. It also calls them to hold fast to biblical truth regarding God’s salvific work in his people’s lives.

Thanks for the review! I can't wait to get this and gather my friends around and go through this. I've been looking forward to it for quite some time!

You mentioned Piper's teaching seminar on the same topic which has been available through Desiring God for some time; it was audio only. I listened to it repeatedly a couple of years ago and my wife and I found genuine blessings in his teaching--light and heat, as the Puritans would say. I'm looking forward to this DVD!

I personally appreciate much of John Piper's body of work; however I'm deeply troubled by his ongoing high-profile enabling of the appallingly potty-mouthed "Reformissional Rev" Mark Driscoll.

I guess I'm experiencing a bit of spiritual vertigo with Piper as I can't seem to reconcile his orthodoxy with his orthopraxy in this particular area.

    Am I alone here?

    In Christ,

Not that I spend a substantial amount of time listening to Driscoll or reading his stuff, but I do know that he has has tremendous influence for good. Could it be that God raised up a very specific individual to fulfill a very specific role in a very difficult area. Of course he is imperfect. Give the guy a break.

Who are we to judge the servant of another I might ask? I think Piper sees something in Driscoll that is worth endorsing, and if it is simply the gospel he proclaims I think that is enough. Lets not slander a fellow-worker in the Gospel because he does things differently and takes different stances on secondary and tertiary issues. Rather thank God for Driscoll's (and others) place and role in the present world and pray your heart out for him that he would beautifully adorn the gospel of grace.

    There he goes again!

See, for me this type of news is discorting because is demonstrates a pattern of poor judgment by Dr. Piper as opposed to perhaps one recurring bad choice with respect to his endorsement of Driscoll.

Now he's on the record advocating, and inviting yet another very questionable character to his "Desiring God Conference 2009: With Calvin in the Theater of God", Federal Visionist activist Douglas Wilson, earning Piper a well deserved rebuke from R. Scott Clark.

Historically it's this sort of slippery slope, sloppy agape, and proffering of greasy grace that tends towards the promotion of syncretism, ecumenism and rank error spreding like cancer in the body of the outwardly professing church.

    In Christ,

    M. Driscoll has matured into a marvelous teacher of God's Word. His current Luke series is wonderful. He has become a seriour man of God with an intense love of God's Word. God is honoring the careful teaching of His Word on the Mars Hill campuses.
