"...if anyone makes the assistance of grace depend on the humility or obedience of man and does not agree that it is a gift of grace itself that we are obedient and humble, he contradicts the Apostle who says, "What have you that you did not receive?" (1 Cor. 4:7), and, "But by the grace of God I am what I am" (1 Cor. 15:10). (Council of Orange: Canon 6)

Quoting our Depravity

The first time a preacher quotes something he thinks to be profound it normally goes something like this: "As my dear friend and colleague Professor Dunning once said..."

The second time he quotes him, it sounds like this, "As a famous Professor once said..."

The third time: "As someone once said..."

Fourth time: "Like I always say..."

This really made me laugh! This is where comedy makes hard truth a relief. Because, it is so true we cannot stand to see it in us, and when we do, we need it to be with a giggle knowing it is in us all and not me alone. How often have I secretly discovered/been exposed seeing this in me. The authority and the credit for other things - even the word of God as a well known Oakland radio preacher does! If God speaks than he speaks through me so that all can know who I am before God and man!
I loved this so much having guilt the other day in seeing it in me. Thank God for his teaching on mans depraved condition.
